Reservation, a political gimmick

Yesterday, my blog friend, Sawal Guru posted an article on stay over implementation of 27% OBC reservation in Higher Educational Institutes like IIM and IIT. My this post is in that context.

This young child is not able to study, where are our those reservation supporters? Isn't it better to provide him basic primary education, so that he can at least be a responsible citizen.

Here, I'd like to narrate an old incident...

My friend's father is working for a pvt. firm since 15 years. He worked day and night, apart from his regular jobs, he did some part time jobs and anyhow after long struggle he collected 4-5 lakhs of rupees, so that he can now manage to pay fees for her daughter's medical entrance coaching and her fees etc. He spent around 2-3 lakhs for her coaching. She also worked a lot, although she was an average student, she worked really hard to get through the entrance examination.
When the result was declared, she was only few marks short of cut off and the a boy who secured around 30% less than her was selected, we all know why? And it was when he belonged to a family, which was not at all short of anything, they had money, bungalow, power...

Now those who support reservation, just tell me, who is being discriminated, a general class one or a scheduled class one.

We blame our forefathers of being unjust to lower caste, but:
Should present be punished because of past?
Is reservation in higher institutes a solution for their upliftment? Can't anything else be done?
Can't they be provided with better educational opportunities?
Can't they be given free education only so that those who are really good ones, may come forward?
Do you know how many of those reserved are able to even pass easily in those higher studies examinations? They stumble several times during their studies and few even leave in between.
There are many more questions, which are still answered.

In few organizations, reservation is as high as 49-51%. This is entirely a political stunt. Every now and then, communities coming on the road to include them under reserved category.
This fire has been lit up by our beloved politicians,(Our "beloved" minister Arjun Singh, who has started this again) which are no less than the British, rather I would say worse than them.

The British were dividing other people, but these politicians, they are following the same policy "Divide and Rule" on their own people. What for, lust of power, seat, vote banks?

We say in India, we follow "sam dharma sambhav". It seems good in words only, the actuality is worse. We are no less than a puppet in hands of politicians, who are busy filling their houses with money, let India go to...

The need of the hour is to get up as one identity and uproot those bloody politicians. This is not one hour or one day job, only a revolution can change it now. But, now we'll have to wake up from our sleep and not allow them to attack on our unity.

Here is a Joke on the same (posted by my blog friend Beekay)

Manmohan Singh to Bush – We are sending Indians to the moon next year.
Bush – Wow! How Many?
Manmohan Singh - 100
25 - OBC
25 - SC
20 - ST
5 - Handicapped
5 - Sports Persons
5 - Terrorist Affected
5 - Kashmiri Migrants
9 - Politicians
and if possible
1 – Astronnaut !!!!!

Yes this is a joke, But no one knows when such jokes became reality.

hmmmm a very effective and stinging post. u got it right, its a politically motivated decision by arjjun singh so that his party can stay in power on the basis of this one decision. social justice needs to be done but it can be achieved with a mere 10% reservation.
by deciding 51% reservation, 2 things are achieved, upliftment of 40% OBC candidates which is not neccessarily deserved, and not keeping in line with their population. and denying merit to 40% deserving candidates from the other castes, which is again a form of social injustice.
ur thoughts and ur expressions are very powerful aditi i must say, u can think of some serious writing in future too

My argument always has been, 'If the govt wants to compensate some one for historical injustices, fine go ahead, but DO NOT take from someone deserving and give it away. You have no right!"

What happened to your friend is unjust and tragic!!

Aditi said...

@shiva
that's what i want to say, why giving away seats of deserving to those who do not deserve, this is what our govt. does, give the backward ones a chance to come forward but not on the cost of others lives

Well it is certainly all politics..all stunt and all drama.
But thats what politicians are meant to do..
They have been eating the society all the time..Kings..Priests..Rulers..Clergymen..
all of them..
And it had always needed a revolution to bring about the change...
As they say..you hafta scream to make the deaf ear listen to ya...

Nice article !!!

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in this post! This is all a political gimmick, and the reservation should, if at all, be based on economic status and not by caste.. But sometimes I wonder if this opinion of mine is only becoz I belong to the higher caste which is now being discriminated against, and whether I'd have totally supported it, had I been an OBC... But after thinking about it, I think the youth of the country, esp in the cities, is thinking more fairly and justly than the politicians ever will!

Good that the post has touched upon this burning issue and kept the debate alive..

a very interesting blog, but something which a lot of people have been debating abt. I even had an altercation with one of my college mates who got just 45% but got a free seat claiming to be a ST, but he comes to the college driving his own gypsy. But again, I also know of people who genuinely need this reservation as well. It is a tough call to come up with a system which cannot be taken advantage off, but it is definitely not impossible.

though am not a beneficiary of reservation, i support reservation for some well thought about reasons. the concept has to been seen from a broader perspective. my current post at ibibo has traces of the same.

A well presented post, but could have hit the politicians more harder as they are bloody hard nuts. These politicians (not all of course) are solely responsible for the very concept of reservations in education and employment in our country, therefore let’s take the pride , pleasure and privilege of calling and knowing them as scroungers, scoundrels and good for nothing clowns.

Reservation can be described as a thing devised by the politicians to deceive the deserved ones and thereby murder merit. UTTER NON-SENSE by the rulers for their platinum class and style of cozy living.

Reservation policy has already ruined India to some extend and if the politicians for their own vested interest continues to implement the reservation policy and keep hiking the %(once implemented the next step is going to be increasing the %), the country will undoubtedly will go to docks.

Be it education or employment, only MERIT should be the criterion and rule of the land. To see all-round efficiency and excellence. What’s the big deal and use of admitting students for education and candidates for employment on reservation basis? It’s a clear-cut evidence of inviting inefficiency and to mar the country and kill it’s competent and efficient people.

If this reservation policy is implemented and continues, you will very shortly see in our country medical practitioners who do not know how to hold stethoscope and use it, Gynecologsts who will not know how to attend to pregnancy deliveries and anesthetist who will for ever put the patients to ultimate sleep and so on, engineers who will have no idea at all as to how to approach projects to begin, handle machineries, engines etc. etc. and scientists who will blow off the satellite launches made spending millions of dollars. All these kind of guys lacked in Merit when they enrolled for their education and employment.

Let ONLY MERIT be our watchword and slogan and bury the reservation concept and policy in education and employment.

And left to me I would like to call it as a Political GIMMICK rather than STUNT as stunt has got better meaning and not for use in this context.

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this.

Let’s start the reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for muslims. 30 percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket rules should be modified accordingly. The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by a OBC player should be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a century.

We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player. Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 kilometer per hour to an OBC player. Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal.

Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.
